Way to go Charlie!

7-year old boy raises almost £200,000 for Haiti

pp080210-charlieSince the earthquake destroyed Haiti, thousands upon thousands of people there have been left homeless and hurt, without food, water and medical supplies. Hundreds of children have also been orphaned, and are now extremely vulnerable to a myriad of disease and dangers.

Their need is dire, and countless organisations have been asking us, the world, to help. But one wonders, beyond prayers and donations, how much can we do for them, really? This question has been answered, not by a scholar or activist, but by a seven-year-old boy from London.

Charlie Simpson, from Fulham, has single handedly raised almost £200,000 for Unicef's Haiti quake relief effort, just by pledging to cycle five miles (8km) around South Park near his home. His initial aim for the sponsored bike ride was just £500, but clearly, his call for support through the JustGiving website, has touched the hearts of many people around the world.

On his JustGiving page, Charlie said: "I want to do a sponsored bike ride for Haiti because there was a big earthquake and loads of people have lost their lives. I want to make some money to buy food, water and tents for everyone in Haiti." Along with donations, Charlie’s page has been flooded by messages of support and admiration. As one supporter put it, "Well done Charlie - you are an inspiration to us all."

David Bull, Unicef's UK executive director, has described Charlie's kind act as a "little seed" that had rapidly grown into something much bigger. "This is a very bold and innovative gesture by Charlie that shows he connects with and not only understands what children his own age must be going through in Haiti, but is also wise enough to know that he can help them," he said.

Unicef is helping to provide water, sanitation, education and nutrition, as well as supporting child protection in Haiti. If you want to help the cause and support Charlie’s effort, visit his JustGiving page at: http://www.justgiving.com/CharlieSimpson-HAITI

As a parent, I am utterly touched by Charlie’s act of kindness and selflessness. In this day and age, it’s so important for us to teach our children to care about and help others, and Charlie is truly an amazing example for kids and grown ups alike.
