The Reunion Checklist

A step-by-step checklist to get rid of the old and welcome the new

hh080210-807418_91482545Indulge in the warmth of reuniting with your family this Chinese New Year with a these little reminders  to a roaring year of good fortune and wealth.



1 week before
• Clean the house thoroughly. Get rid of all the things that relate to the old year. To maintain it for the rest of the week, do a quick daily routine but don’t forget to put away all brooms and brushes.
• Pay all your debts.
• Resolve any disagreements with family, friends and business associates.
• Make detailed shopping list. Map out destinations of each item to streamline your shopping route. Don’t forget the red envelopes!
• Make a pit stop at the bank to pick up fresh and crisp ringgits.

3 days before
• Lay out all decorations except for the flowers.
• Shop for all your food and beverage.
• Set the stage. Move around furniture if you need to, whether its adding chairs to the dining table or moving the coffee table to the side. Figure out the lighting you need for the mood you wish to create.
• Bring out all the linen. Set the table cloth and the number of napkins needed. Replace the sheets in the guest bedroom for the overnight guests and make sure towels are clean and fresh.

On Chinese New Year’s Eve
• Buy flowers in the morning.
• Be sure dishwasher is empty.
• Iron all new clothes in the morning.
• Last run on the cleaning. Touch up where necessary.
• Have a wonderful reunion dinner.
• Open every door and window in your house at midnight to release all spirits of the old year.

On Chinese New Year’s Day
• Decorate the house with symbols of good fortune.
• Start cooking early if you are hosting an open house.
• Don’t sweep the floors.
• Greet each other with “Gong Xi Fa Chai”!
